The DOD defines a directed-energy weapon as “an umbrella term covering technologies that produce a beam of concentrated Electro-Magnetic energy or atomic or subatomic particles.” Microwave, Over-the-Horizon-Radar, and Scalar Waves can be fired at long distance. Some directed energy can be transmitted  by bouncing their signal off of the ionosphere.
